International Advocacy

AIPLA works closely with international organizations and governments to advocate for our members' interests.

AIPLA has served both the national and international IP communities for well over a century with education, advocacy, and practice development programs and events.  We recognize the important role attorneys and agents play in the protection of international intellectual property rights.

In 2002, AIPLA and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Intellectual Property.  During the following year, AIPLA, along with Business Europe (BE), Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO),and Japan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA) becames members of the Industry Trilateral. the industry counterpart to the Trilateral Offices. Thereafter, the Industry Trilateral was joined by Korean Intellectual Property Association (KINPA) and Patent Protection Association of China (PPAC) to form the Industry IP5, the industry counterpart to the five IP Offices (IP5).

In addition to engaging in Industry/Foreign Office Cooperation, AIPLA reached out to National IP Practitioner Associations from around the globe to come together in a summit to discuss common issues and challenges and share the views and visions of colleagues around the world (for more information see The Global Network).

We advocate on behalf of our members and make our views known to various international bodies and governments.

AIPPI-US Division of AIPLA
AIPPI was founded in 1897, shortly following the signing of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property in 1883. Following the initiative of leading European legal scientists and practitioners, a founders' meeting was held in Brussels on May 8, 1897 and in October, 1897, the first Congress was convened in Vienna, with subsequent festivities in Budapest. Meetings, or Congresses, of the Association were held annually in the early stages, later alternating with "Reunions" until the beginning of the first World War caused an interruption in 1914. Following the end of World War I, the revival of the association took place in 1925 and the administrative center of AIPPI moved to Switzerland. As a consequence of the second World War, the activities of the association suffered a second interruption from 1938 to 1946.

The development of AIPPI to its present form has been a continuous one. Starting with an emphasis on Western Europe, it has become a truly international association, including North and South America, Eastern European countries, Asia, Australia, and Africa.

The major executive/administrative body of the international organization is the International Bureau comprised of a President, Vice President, Reporter General, Deputy Reporter Generals, Assistant Reporter Generals, and Treasurer General. The international organization is administered by the Secretary General and his/her staff.

AIPPI-US

The AIPPI-Division of AIPLA, was originally founded as a non-profit organization in 1930 and has approximately 375 members, including both individuals and corporations. In October 2012, AIPLA acquired the AIPPI-US Group.  Membership in AIPPI UNITED STATES automatically includes membership in AIPPI. The United States has one of the largest representations on the International Executive Committee of AIPPI.
