Arlington, Va. The United States Senate today confirmed the appointment of Andrei Iancu as the next Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Iancu currently serves as the managing partner of Irell & Manella LLP's Los Angeles firm and will begin his new role at USPTO headquarters located in Alexandria, VA.

Andrei Iancu's practice focused on intellectual property litigation, along with all aspects of intellectual property practice, including patent and trademark prosecution, due diligence and licensing. He has represented clients in technological fields including genetic testing, the Internet, medical devices, therapeutics, telephone, TV broadcasting, video game systems and computer peripherals. In addition to his legal practice, Iancu co-teaches an advanced patent class at UCLA School of Law, where he serves as an adjunct professor.

AIPLA President Myra M. McCormack said: "I congratulate Mr. Iancu on his confirmation as the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. We wish him the best and pledge to work with the Office in a constructive manner to always look for ways to keep improving the intellectual property system."

AIPLA Executive Director Lisa K. Jorgenson also commented: "Our Association appreciates the challenges Director Iancu will be facing during this critical time in the world of IP. We wish him much success and look forward to learning more about his plans regarding the Office, and providing assistance where we can."
