On first impression, design law seems to vary considerably around the world, and even to experienced utility patent practitioners, design law in different countries may seem confusing and sometimes contradictory. The goal of this first edition of Comparative Global Design Law is to explain the common, basic framework underlying design law in most countries, along with providing a clear understanding of the basic differences among the design laws in the top six jurisdictions (China, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Through a common outline and a common set of examples, each country chapter is designed to allow readers to readily compare the laws and design statistics of the different jurisdictions. The book closes with some important strategic considerations for readers who embark on developing a worldwide design rights portfolio.
