Scott Cummings is a leader of Dentons' Post-Grant Group of the Intellectual Property and Technology practice. Dentons’ Post-Grant practice has received national accolades. In the 2018 Patexia IPR Intelligence Report performance ratings, Dentons was ranked number 1 for Petitioner representation, and ranked number 4 overall.

Scott has experience in such diverse areas as medical devices, clean energy (e.g., solar, fuel cells, catalysts), nanotechnology, metallurgy, polymer chemistry, inorganic chemistry (e.g., silica) and automotive technologies. He has worked with clients ranging from domestic startups to large multinational corporations.

Recognized as an expert-level practitioner by his peers, Scott is a frequent instructor for continuing legal education programs.

Scott has an established track record of achieving positive results for clients in representations before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in ex parte and inter partes patent office proceedings, and in federal district courts. His mixture of litigation and patent office experience is more important than ever in providing clients with the integrated and comprehensive approach, now critical to successfully handling patent disputes that often encompass concurrent district court and complex USPTO post-grant proceedings.

Scott has extensive experience in all aspects of USPTO proceedings, including Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs), written and oral interagency appeals, petitions, reexamination, reissue and interference proceedings. He also frequently advises clients on issues involving freedom to operate, patent infringement, patent validity and design-around analyses. His knowledge of USPTO operations and procedure is augmented by his eight-year tenure as a patent examiner, including service as a primary examiner.

A registered patent lawyer, Scott has been named an "IP Star" by Managing Intellectual Property magazine for five consecutive years.
