Tour of the Renwick Gallery

Today guests will enjoy the special exhibition of No Spectators: The Art of   Burning Man.  Each year in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, a city of more   than 70,000 people rises out of the dust for a single week. During that time, enormous experimental art installations are erected and many are ritually burned to the ground. The thriving temporary metropolis known as Burning  Man is a hotbed of artistic ingenuity, driving innovation through its  principles of radical self-expression, deco modification, communal  participation, and reverence for the handmade. Both a cultural movement   and an annual event, burning man remains one of the most influential  phenomenons in contemporary American art and culture. No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man brings the large-scale, participatory work from this desert gathering to the nation’s capital for the first time.

The Renwick Gallery is home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection of contemporary craft and decorative art, one of the finest and most extensive collections of its kind. The museum’s home is a National Historic Landmark, the first built expressly as an art museum in the United States, and is named in honor of its architect, James Renwick, Jr. It has been a branch of the Smithsonian since 1972. The Renwick exhibits the most exciting works by artists exploring traditional and innovative approaches to making, emphasizing craft as an approach to living differently in the modern world. Collections, special exhibitions, and scholarship highlight how extraordinary handmade objects have shaped the American experience and continue to impact our lives. At the conclusion of the Renwick tour, guests will enjoy a walking tour of Lafayette Park.
