The mission of the Emerging Technologies Committee is to foster communication and education in areas of Emerging Technologies and Intellectual Property Law. Committee goals include developing and producing educational programs relating to Emerging Technologies at the Committee level and at the three national AIPLA meetings.
Green Technology and Other Current Emerging Technologies
The ETC has been asked to cover and report on green technology – including climate change -- as well as other green tech issues (accelerating green patents, etc.).
In addition to Green Technology, specific current emerging technologies identified by the ETC include:
Subcommittees have been formed around these technologies. However, as technologies emerge and/or mature, it is expected that the subcommittees will be updated.
Current Educational Topics
At the 2009 Annual Meeting, the ETC held a joint educational meeting with the Electronic and Computer Law Committee directed toward international green technology patenting trends including litigation and prosecution perspective and tips. The panel included: Manny Schecter (moderator), Raymond Van Dyke (moderator), Henry Behnke (speaker), Bryan Geurts (speaker), James Klaiber (speaker), Scott Stinebruner (speaker), and Matthew Bryan (speaker).
At the 2010 Midwinter Institute, the ETC is conducting a joint educational committee meeting with the IP in Latin America Committee and the Special Committee on Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge, and Folklore. The topic will be genetic resources. The program will include a general discussion on genetic resources followed by presentations on the application of IP laws related to genetic resources in Brazil, China, and India.
