Mission Statement 

Our goal is to effectively serve AIPLA members from diverse backgrounds, to encourage the professional growth of our members, and to embrace and celebrate the diversity of our membership. We intend to develop content to facilitate our members' professional development, to promote our members within AIPLA, and to provide awareness and understating of diversity within the IP profession, in general, and AIPLA in particular.

Subcommittees

Our goal is to provide opportunities to facilitate our members' professional development and encourage members' engagement.  To meet our goal, each of the subcommittees listed below performs the following tasks.

 
Professional Development Subcommittee:

•    Plan and maintain a speaker bank - Click here to access the speaker bank survey
•    Plan and schedule webinar speakers for committee meetings
•    Coordinate our Liaison program

Outreach Subcommittee: 

•    Help plan committee events for AIPLA stated meetings
•    Develop outreach events to engineering/law schools in connection, where possible, with AIPLEF other AIPLA committees, and other affinity bar associations.
•    Coordinate Social Media (Linked In, Newsletter, Facebook) communications.

Ellisen Turner,
Managing Partner-elect, Hiring Chair and a member of the Executive Committee with Irell & Manella LLP.
Mr. Turner specializes in intellectual property and patent litigation. From 2015 to 2017, Mr. Turner was the Vice-Chair and then Chair of the Intellectual Property Section of the National Bar Association, where he continues to serve as a Board member. During this time, he founded the organization's Diversity in Tech Awards, which annually recognize leaders in fostering diversity and inclusion in the STEM and IP fields. He serves on the Litigation Committee and its Education subcommittee in the Intellectual Property Owners Association. Mr. Turner also has been an invited speaker on patent litigation and patent damages at AIPLA and other IP conferences.

Phyllis T. Turner-Brim,
VP Assistant General Counsel Intellectual Property and Technology at Starbucks.
As the head of Starbucks Intellectual Property and Technology legal team, Ms. Turner-Brim leads the legal teams for the worldwide protection, enforcement and deployment of Starbucks' intellectual property portfolio (including trademarks, patents and copyrights). She is a member of the Starbucks Law & Corporate Affairs leadership team, as well as a strategic business partner and legal advisor to executives leading Starbucks Global Strategy and Starbucks Technology teams.

Julie H. Jones,
Partner, Chair-elect and member of the Ropes & Gray's governing board.
In Ropes & Gray's 152-year history, Ms. Jones is the first woman to become Chairperson of the firm. As one of the world's preeminent private equity attorneys, Ms. Jones is recognized by her peers in Chambers for her "genuine, constructive and non-arrogant approach." She served as head of Ropes & Gray's securities and public companies group from 2006 to 2011 and focuses on representing private investment funds and public companies in their most critical business initiatives and transactions. Drawing on her background in securities laws and fiduciary duties requirements, she also counsels' clients on a wide range of compliance and governance issues. (waiting on Ms. Jones confirmation).

Please join the Diversity in IP Law Committee for a guided  fun run/walk during AIPLA Mid-Winter Meeting in La Quinta, CA.  Participants will meet at the health club on Thursday, January 25 at 6:45 am for a guided 5K run or 3K walk on a path around the resortParticipation is at your own risk!

The Diversity in IP Law Committee had  a  fun run/walk during AIPLA Spring Meeting in San Diego, CA.  The group of runners/walkers met in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel on May 17th at 6:15 am. 


Multi-City Happy Hour - June 8, 2017

On June 8, 2017, attorneys from diverse backgrounds in various cities around the United States came together to celebrate diversity in IP Law.
