AIPLA WELCOMES NEW BOARD OFFICER AND MEMBERS

 INCLUDING NEW AIPLA PRESIDENT WILLIAM G. BARBER AND CONGRATULATES AWARD RECIPIENTS

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) is proud to welcome new AIPLA President William G. Barber, founding partner with PirkeyBarber, LLC. Mr. Barber is a recognized leader in the field of IP Law and has been active in the organization for over 20 years.  Mr. Barber will also serve as the chair of the Executive Committee consisting of the other officers of the Association, including Jeffrey I.D. Lewis, a partner with Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler, LLP in New York, NY as AIPLA’s President-Elect, Wayne P. Sobon, IP Counsel for Rambus, Inc. in Sunnyvale, CA as First Vice President, Sharon Israel, a partner with Mayer Brown, LLP in Houston, TX as Second Vice President, David W. Hill, a partner with Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP in Washington, DC as Immediate Past President.  Also elected during the 2011 AIPLA Annual Meeting were Secretary Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Morgan of the Morgan Law Firm, Atlanta GA,  and Treasurer Georgann Grunebach, Vice President, Intellectual Property at the Fox Legal Group,  as well as board members Barbara Fiacco of Foley Hoag, LLP in Boston, MA, Kevin Tottis of the Law Offices of Kevin Tottis in Chicago, IL, Chen Wang, Deputy Chief IP Counsel for DuPont in Wilmington, DE, J. Michael Martinez de Andino of Hunton & Williams, LLP in Richmond, VA.  We are also pleased to announce that Mark Whitaker of Baker Botts in Washington, DC has been appointed General Counsel.

 AIPLA also congratulates the following award recipients:
 
•    Donald R. Dunner, Partner, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, recipient of the 2011 AIPLA Excellence Award, in recognition of extraordinary leadership and service to the Intellectual Property Community, which is representative of a distinguished career marked by intellect, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the administration of justice.
•    John B. Pegram, Senior Principal, Fish & Richardson, recipient of AIPLA’s President’s Outstanding Service Award, in recognition of and with gratitude for his years of service to AIPLA, as a member and committee leader.
•    Ehab M. Samuel, Associate, Dickstein Shapiro, LLP, recipient of an AIPLA Project Award, In recognition of his outstanding service to the American Intellectual Property Law Association and particularly for his work as the Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee in setting up monthly meetings around the country which has increased networking and membership.
•    Patrick J. Coyne, Partner, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, as a recipient of an AIPLA Project Award, in recognition of his outstanding service to the American Intellectual Property Law Association, particularly in his leadership as Chair of the Amicus Committee for three years and Co-Chair of the Special Committee on Legislation.
•    Michele K. Herman, recently named incoming Chief Counsel for Innovation Programs with Intellectual Ventures, recipient of an AIPLA Project Award, in recognition of her outstanding service to the American Intellectual Property Law Association and particularly for her imprint on standards and AIPLA’s role and her expert recommendations to the Board as Co-Chair of the Special Committee on Standards and Open Source.
•    J. Michael Martinez de Andino, Partner, Hunton & Williams, recipient of the AIPLA Mentor of the Year Award, in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the association's goal of providing professional and career guidance to AIPLA members.
•    Sean Ricks, Vivint, Inc., recipient of AIPLA’s Inaugural Maurice Klitzman Award, which provides the opportunity for a junior corporate attorney or corporate patent agent to attend the Annual Meeting and be connected with an experienced AIPLA mentor.
•    James Freedman, Stanford Law School, recipient of AIPLA’s 2011 Robert C. Watson Award, which recognizes the author of the best article on a subject relating to the protection of intellectual property.
•    Andrew Sellars, George Washington University Law School, recipient of AIPLA’s 2011 Jan Jancin Award, which recognizes his outstanding achievements in the study of intellectual property law.
•    Nancy Cheng, University of California, Santa Clara, recipient of AIPLA’s 2011 Past President’s Award, which recognizes her outstanding academic achievements in the study of intellectual property law.
