AIPLA Comments on the Appointment of Michelle Lee as USPTO Deputy Director

December 11, 2013, Arlington, VA—With the appointment today of Michelle K. Lee as Deputy Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Obama Administration has made progress towards completing the leadership team at the USPTO, the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) recognized today.
"Having been without the full complement of permanent leadership for too long, we are encouraged that this process is now continuing," said AIPLA Executive Director Q. Todd Dickinson. "We fully appreciate the challenges Michelle will be facing, especially at this critical time, both at the Office and in the world of IP generally, and finding the right balance among diverse stakeholder interests will be perhaps the most important test. We have worked with Michelle as Director of the Silicon Valley Office of the USPTO, and we look forward to doing all we can to help her in her new role. We congratulate her on her appointment."
AIPLA President Wayne P. Sobon also commented: "As fellow residents of Silicon Valley and co-workers on the PTO's Patent Public Advisory Committee, I've come to know Michelle well, and I look forward to the prospect of working even more closely with her as she transitions into her new assignment."

The next most critical appointment is that of the Under Secretary of Commerce of Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office and AIPLA hopes that a nomination will be forthcoming soon.
AIPLA, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, was founded in 1897 to maintain a high standard of professional ethics, to aid in the improvement in laws relating to intellectual property and in their proper interpretation by the courts, and to provide legal education to the public and to its members on intellectual property issues. AIPLA is a national bar association constituted primarily of lawyers in private and corporate practice, in government service, and in the academic community.
