June 2005

Conference on Patent Reform

Following the years of review and study of the U.S. Patent System, the National Academies Board on Science Technology and Economics (STEP) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued reports with recommendations on modernizing U.S. Patent Law.  AIPLA thoroughly reviewed both reports and prepared detailed responses to each.  Many stakeholders in the patent system will be affected by the changes recommended.  We therefore initiated an important dialogue to solicit the stakeholders’ participation about what the problems are and what changes need to be made.  At the series of Town Meetings held in February and March, we heard from the stakeholders.  These Town Meetings culminated in a conference in Washington, DC, taking into account all of the feedback we received during these programs.
