The Media and Its Portrayal of IP July 22, 2009 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The last several years have witnessed a flurry of transformative patent reform activity. The Supreme Court has issued key rulings affecting the availability of injunctive and declaratory relief, revised the law of obviousness, and limited the extraterritorial reach of the patent act. Now Congress stands poised to ratify significant and far-reaching changes to the patent system. As a part of this activity, there has been a significant amount of media coverage of the patent system and various reasons which might or might not justify reform. Given the media’s well-recognized power to influence public attitudes, it is important for patent system participants, interest groups, and policy-makers to understand the picture presented by the media. Regardless of whether the media aptly describes or distorts the patent system, its influential role in the current policy debates should not be ignored.
The AIPLA Public Education Committee andthe AIPLA Online Programs Committee are pleased to present Professor Lisa Dolak who is overseeing astudy which is analyzing major newspaper coverage of the patent system from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2008 to systematically assess how the press portrayed the U.S. patent system. We believe it is helpful to all practitioners to get an objective rather than anecdotal picture of how patents are being portrayed in the media and so are providing this seminar free of charge. The program will also briefly address AIPLA's current efforts in developing programs to help educate the public and its representatives about the value of IP and opportunities for concerned or interested attorneys to get involved in these efforts. These efforts range from youth education, to education generally on the internet, to efforts more directly aimed at the public's representatives in the congress and the courts.
