AIPLA International Patent Law Handbook

The AIPLA Patent Handbook on-line provides new and experienced IP practitioners with a quick, comparative overview of practical international patent law issues. It also taps the pulse of the constantly changing fields of biotechnology, software and business method patenting. Click HERE to access the International Patent Law Handbook. Please note, you'll need to login to access this members only area.

The AIPLA Patent Handbook lists frequently asked questions and answers that provide a basic comparative analysis of patent practice in Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States. It addresses what may or may not be patentable and suggests approaches for patent protection. The Handbook is intended to be an entry-level resource only. Local counsel should always be consulted to obtain complete and up-to-date information concerning a country of interest.

Contributors who practice in the various jurisdictions have provided the core of the AIPLA Patent Handbook. Verifiers who also practice in these jurisdictions have ensured accuracy.

The on-line format of the AIPLA Patent Handbook allows users to search by specific questions within one jurisdiction or, in some cases, by a question across all jurisdictions simultaneously. The AIPLA Patent Handbook will answer questions on a country-specific basis such as:

  • the requirements for a filing date
  • grace periods following a public disclosure
  • time limits for national phase entry as well as extensions of time
  • patentability of software-related inventions

The AIPLA Patent Handbook currently covers key jurisdictions. Additional jurisdictions will be added to future editions.

The AIPLA Patent Handbook is made available on a non-profit basis and updated periodically. Please read the disclaimer carefully since you use the Handbook entirely at your own risk.

We hope this will be a useful resource that takes patent practitioners around the world and back. If you have any comments please contact one of the editors.
