Following years of review and study of the U.S. Patent System, the National Academies Board on Science Technology and Economics (NAS) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued reports with recommendations on modernizing U.S. Patent Law. AIPLA thoroughly reviewed both reports and prepared detailed responses to each. The three organizations have joined to publicize these studies and the common recommendations of the NAS, the FTC, and AIPLA in anticipation of congressional hearings.
Because many stakeholders in the patent system would be affected by the recommended changes, we also initiated a series of “Town Meetings on Patent Reform” to solicit broad participation in identifying the problems and the changes that need to be made. The meetings took place in San Jose, CA (2/18/05), Chicago, IL (3/4/05), and Boston, MA (3/18/05), and the series will culminate on June 9, 2005, with a conference in Washington, DC. The goal is to ensure that all stakeholders in the patent system have an opportunity to express their opinions and views to influence the legislative process.
